On December 25th, 2005 (Christmas Day) I was presented with
a very
unique and thoughtful Christmas gift by my parents-in-law
(Larry &
Louise), a metal detector.
I began using my metal detector, a Famous Trails
'Advanced'
Model MD9300, right away. I found the detector very easy to use,
almost right out of the box. In just minutes,
I was totally hooked!
Below is a list of my 'finds,' to date, with images of selected
finds to be added soon (watch for links on the items):

12/25/05 ... My first treasure hunt,
15 min. on
my parent's -in-law property - Hobbs, New Mexico:
1. A small piece of scrap metal, probably from the house siding, debris. My first find!
(5 in. deep).
2. 1952-D Wheat Cent, found near the side walk, next to a side street. I'm a believer!
(5 in. deep).
3. 1949-D Wheat Cent ... found in the same spot as the first penny.
Incredible, I am hooked!
4. Old sardine can. I kept only the key from the can, as a souvenir of
my first day 'hunting' (7 in.).
5. 1979-D penny. Nothing special, but worth a penny, keeping it (found 3 inches
deep).
12/26/05 ... After
a long night of tossing and turning, dreaming about my new hobby ...
Morning search. 10-15 minutes, on the same property in
Hobbs, NM:
6. A small metal padlock-type key, labeled "ABUS" and "Germany"
(found 3 inches deep).
7. 1987-D penny, just a penny ... but my wife, Melanie, found this one,
special (4 inches deep).
8. A surveyors flag, thin metal wire-type. I know, refuse, but another
Melanie find (1/2 in. deep).
Afternoon search. Approx.1 hour, local public park
pathway in Hobbs, NM:
9. 1999-D penny. One cent closer to retirement (found 1 inch deep).
10. Three different aluminum can/remains: Diet Coke, Pepsi, Red Bull (3
digs, all 6-7 in.), trash.
12/27/05 ... Day three
with my new hobby, various public sites around Hobbs, New Mexico:
11. 2001-D dime, corroded. Found in 15
min., off of a school playground sidewalk (5 inches deep).
12. Two old, large bolts, a nut, a washer, and 7 small (newer) washers - all
found in 20 minutes
underneath the old bleachers at the Hobbs High School
Football Stadium (all 1/2 - 4 inches).
13. A large, old nail and an old marble, both found while searching an old
abandoned, dilapidated
storefront and shack in Monument, New Mexico - a real
ghost town! (1 and 4 inches deep).
14. 1996-D dime, and 1969-D, 1979, 1986, 1993-D, 1995-D, 2001-D, 2005-D
cents, and 3 misc. iron
bolts, all found in 30 minutes near a little league baseball stadium and
playground next to a
Hobbs, NM Elem. School (all surface to 4 inches deep). Payday, at last!
12/28/05 ... Day four, we
spent 2 hours searching, in two spots.
Just east of Eunice, New Mexico (at an old abandoned 3 room building):
15. Three old, rusty nails (3 different sizes,
at various depths 2-4 inches), an old washer (1 in. deep),
and an old, rusty pair of wire-cutters (surface - 1/2
inch deep, visible.
Then, a search at a local elementary school (Hobbs,
NM), and a nearby baseball diamond:
16. A 1980-D nickel (8 inches deep), a penny (surface, visible), and
a large metal washer (12 inches
deep, 15 minutes digging before recovery, really
something - I wasn't giving up).
12/31/05 ... In the
gravel parking lot of a medical complex in Hobbs, New Mexico:
A 1984-D dime, two pennies, and an old 'iron and
lead' slug or bullet (very old), all found approx. 1/2 to 1 inch below
surface. |
